I recently heard this from the baseball community. A, who trained at a famous overseas club, returned earlier than scheduled.
We don’t know in detail what inevitable circumstances A had. However, the scouting industry was talking about trust. There is a saying, “If you come back like that, what will happen to the people who will go forward and those who want to go?”
From the perspective of overseas clubs, they create a place for outsiders to disclose their inner workings, but it is a problem if they lack the will or attitude to cooperate with them or are suspected of their sincerity. It also includes concerns that domestic baseball players and clubs may experience difficulties in continuing their training programs.
I was convinced. When I was working for the club, I tried many things to provide opportunities for coaches, trainers, and staff to train for overseas clubs, but it was not easy. As it was a new team (NC Dinos), we lacked our own network and had no records accumulated about us, so we had to mobilize some connections. We created an opportunity to connect with local teams, even for a short time, by utilizing overseas training periods. We also benchmarked some Korean teams that are good at this kind of work. When there was a person in charge of experiencing an overseas club, he shared e-mails and various materials sent from there with related people inside the team. I wanted it to be ” everyone’s knowledge,” not “personal information.” 안전놀이터
So it’s sad to hear a case like A. It’s an opportunity. There are more similar cases like this. They’re the other baseball players who say, “It’s a program that we all do. There’s nothing new and there’s nothing to learn.”
After spending time and money to train at an overseas club, he says he was of little help. Unfortunately, this is often the case with players whose names were expensive. To someone who confidently says, “It wasn’t a big deal,” I would like to ask again whether they tried to take a deeper look. Where does such “self-esteem” come from.
I think it’s because you don’t know how to ask questions properly and you lack curiosity. When you go to the field of an overseas club with a longer history and know-how, there is always something surprising about the training site facilities, layout, and movement, and time planning or diet. It’s a good opportunity to learn what the science of training means, how individual parts or fields are connected to each other, and under what comprehensive design training and evaluation move.
The trainee expects to get both details and the big picture. Nevertheless, it is a waste of time and money that they have spent on learning if they reach the one-dimensional level of travelogues that “they use the latest equipment like 000.” It is also an excuse to use language barriers. It is like a confession about a plan to learn something or lack of preparation in advance. I have also seen cases where people spend their own money to seek interpreters if necessary.
It is similar when baseball players are trained in Korea. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) Coach Academy gathers new coaches from each club to conduct intensive training during the month of December, and some former star players avoid taking classes several times. While most new coaches complete their mandatory program in the first year, some postpone or skip classes for several reasons.
I also gave a lecture on “How Do Good Coaches Evaluate Yourself” at the academy late last year. There was an impressive participant. I am Kim Jae-deok (51) of the Dongseong High School baseball team in Gwangju. I was with professional coaches who were very junior to me. He took a day off because the event was held at a training center in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. The compulsory student was absent, but Kim created the space for himself. He said, “Other amateur coaches are also interested in this place, but they just keep an eye on me. They can study the latest baseball theories and trends, psychology and communication techniques. It’s great that you can take a look at me while thinking about other coaches.”
Baseball needs to expand its diverse opportunities for studying. It needs to systematically create courses for coaches. It needs to coach.
