Kim Ha-seong, trade ‘unevent’?…Boston recruits shortstop Mondesi

The trade drama of Kim Ha-seong (San Diego Padres) seems to be coming to an abrupt end.

The teams mentioned so far filled in shortstop with a player other than Kim Ha-seong, and even the Boston Red Sox, the last candidate, recruited another player instead of Kim Ha-seong.

On the 25th (Korean time), Boston traded Kansas City Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi and a player later, and sent left-handed bullpen pitcher Josh Taylor instead.

As a result, all the teams that showed interest in Kim Ha-seong disappeared. Kike Hernandez, who was initially expected to play shortstop, is known to move to second base.

Mondesi has been one of the most injured players in the past few seasons. During the 2018 season, he suffered a right shoulder impingement, groin strain, left shoulder dislocation, left hamstring sprain, and oblique sprain. In his last season, he suffered a season-bending ACL tear.

Still, Boston couldn’t ignore Mondesi’s strength, speed and defense.

Mondesi hit 38 home runs, 54 doubles, 20 triples and 133 stolen bases in 1366 major league at bats. He pitched 2126 innings as a shortstop.

Meanwhile, The Athletic predicted that Ha-seong Kim would stay in the season opener with a 75% chance of wearing a San Diego uniform before this season.
