The England Football Association has prepared for the appointment of a foreign coach in 12 years since Capello.
British media ‘Sports Bible’ reported on the 6th (Korea time) that “the England Football Association has made a major decision that could affect the replacement of coach Gareth Southgate.”
Gareth Southgate resigned as manager of England after losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final on July 16 (Korea time). England reached the Euro final for the second time in a row under Southgate but collapsed once again at the last juncture, losing 2-1 to Spain.
Now, the FA is looking for a new manager for the English men’s team. Southgate’s contract was due by the end of this year, but his early resignation will allow the FA board, led by chief executive Mark Bullingham, to spend more time finding a suitable replacement.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is one of the favourites, while former Chelsea boss Graham Potter is also being considered a candidate. However, the FA has now reportedly made a significant decision to appoint another candidate.
According to the media, the English Football Association gave official approval for the appointment of a foreign coach. Prior to the start of the recruitment process, Bullingham approached foreign candidates with the support of nine fellow board members. The board reportedly approved Bullingham’s request without voting, despite some opposition.
This decision suggests that the FA is open to defying tradition by appointing foreign coaches. Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello are the only two non-English coaches to have played for the English national team.
During board discussions, Sarina Wiigman’s success story in leading England to victory at the 2022 Women’s European Championship was reportedly used as an example of the positive side of the appointment of a foreign coach. Depending on the decision of the English Football Association, either Mauricio Pochettino or Thomas Tuchel could be nominated as a possible foreign coach.
Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have also been considered candidates, but Klopp has declared he will not be in charge for the time being.
