Chicago and OKC 1:1 shock trade…Caruso-Giddy Change

The news of a surprise trade came out.

“The Chicago Bulls and Oklahoma City Thunder made a one-on-one trade,” the U.S. sports media ESPN said on the 21st (Korea time). Alex Caruso (30, 196 cm) will go to Oklahoma City, while Josh Giddy (22, 203 cm) will wear Chicago uniforms. 스포츠토토
Both Caruso and Giddy were key players in Chicago and Oklahoma City. Why did these two teams proceed with the trade?

First, Chicago was looking for a playmaker to replace Lonzo Ball. Point Guard Ball has been groaning with injuries for a long time. The exact timing of his return is still not out.

Chicago has many offensive guards including Derma DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Kobe White, but none of them were good at passing and coordinating games. Chicago needed to fill in its shortcomings somehow, as it wanted to achieve minimal performance than rebuilding.

Giddy, who was drafted sixth overall in the 2016 rookie draft by Oklahoma City, is a tall guard with excellent pass sense. He is as good as a traditional point guard.

He has 11 triple-doubles so far, the fourth-most in NBA history for an under-21 player after Luka Doncic, Magic Johnson and Ben Simmons. His average performance last season was 12.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists.

However, his scoring ability declined compared to 16.6 points per game in the previous season. He also has weaknesses in shooting 3-pointers. Notably, Oklahoma City ranked No. 1 in the Western Conference last season under ace Shai Gilgers-Alexander and two-option Chet Homegran. Giddy’s position was ambiguous, and he was embroiled in trade rumors during the last season.

“If Giddy holds the ball and passes it, Chicago will have a chance to score more points,” ESPN said. “We needed an engine to attack, and we chose Giddy as the right person.”

Oklahoma City embraces Caruso, who was one of the most popular players in the trade market. Caruso is a guard who is so strong that he joined the All-Defensive Team twice. He ranked fourth in the league with 1.7 steals per game last season. In addition, he has accurate 3-point shooting capability. Last season, his 3-point shooting success rate was 40.8 percent.

Caruso’s four-year, $80 million contract with Chicago ends next summer. For Chicago, it wanted to strengthen its power by selling it when Caruso’s value was at its peak.

Oklahoma City also brought Caruso with the team in mind to sign an extension. ESPN reported that the team believes Caruso is an essential player in the long run.

With Caruso joining, Oklahoma City will now have several of the strongest front-line defenders in the league, including Rugentz Dot and Carson Wallace. However, traffic control remains a homework as there are so many guards of similar types.
